"Our Session #2 STAR Nova is here! Click here to sign up for a fun and amazing experience!"

Hello UDA Families,

My name is Alma Harder-Ortega, I am the Site Director for STAR Education here at Urban Discovery.  I have met many of you working here this past year and I look forward to meeting those I have not. For those of you who may not know, STAR Education will be providing both before school and after school child care as well as continuing the enrichment programming on campus.  A little bit about STAR Education, STAR began its work in 1986 with the mission to provide children with quality, creative education programs that significantly improve academic performance and make the school the focal point of the community. STAR incorporated in 1995 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to offer innovative enrichment programs to students in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, the Inland Empire, Sacramento, and more.  In addition to its school-based programs, STAR created the STAR Eco Station, an environmental science education resource and haven for illegally-trafficked animals confiscated by U.S. Fish and Wildlife. Today, through its various programming, including after-school academic and enrichment enhancement, mobile museums and rain forest exhibits, assemblies, family nights, and STAR and STAR Eco Station events, STAR, Inc., has an annual outreach of over 1 million people.  Annually STAR provides over $8 million dollars in scholarships to students.  62% of the students we serve are on partial or full scholarships to attend our programs.

The first program I would like to introduce is called the Galaxy program.  This is our before and after school child care program.  The goal of this program is to provide a safe and fun environment for children to experience new classes, learn and grow.  Children in the Galaxy program will be broken into age appropriate groups and rotate through a variety of fun, educational programs every day. Below is a sample of what our weekly after school rotations will include. Our goal is to help children find what they're amazing at, and celebrate their success.  This program will be offered on a sliding scale for those who may need financial assistance.

The second program we will be continuing to run on campus is our NOVA enrichment program.  This program will takes place after school.  Parents will have the ability to select specific programs that they would like their students to attend once per week for one hour.  The duration of the programs will be eight weeks.  At the end of the eight week session we will have open classes for parents to come see what their students have been working on.  We will be offering one to two classes to to choose from each day. Register here.

Galaxy registration forms will be available on the UDA website as well as in the main office.  I will be attending the upcoming back to school night in August to answer questions and further discuss our programs. Should you have any questions or concerns about either of our programs please don't hesitate to contact me any time.

Sincerely,

Alma Harder-Ortega
