Nominate Yourself for a Position on the Network's Executive Board

The Executive Board needs two new directors (Vice President and Secretary) and a few Room Parent Coordinators to make next year a smooth one for the staff, students and families of UDA.

Please click on the nominating form to read what positions are available and nominate yourself for one of them. Nominations will close on Friday, May 22nd. If you want to read the position descriptions in their entirety, consult the UDA site here. If necessary, we will then send an eballot with candidates for you to cast your vote. We'd love to have you join our team. Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Jay Sener or Jen Jeffress.

Positions Available:

Vice President:

The Vice President is responsible for supporting the Network’s current President, communicating with UDA about weekly news to be published in the UDA Newsletter, and either attending the UDA Board of Trustee meetings or making sure a member of the Network attends the BoT's monthly meeting. The VP should also attend all Executive Committee meetings.

Secretary:
The Secretary is responsible for supporting the Network's Executive Committee by collecting agenda items prior to meetings, distributing agendas ahead of meetings, taking minutes at monthly meetings, and distributing minutes to the Network team for review. Secretary is an excellent position for someone who is organized and able to attend each of the monthly meetings, but still wants to contribute the majority of his or her time from home.

Room Parent Coordinator (Grades K-2, 2-5, Middle School):

Keep a finger on the pulse of the classrooms and work with teachers and parents to provide timely communication, support, and be the go-to person for Room Parent and Teacher needs. Also serve as a conduit to the greater parent community in rallying support for classrooms and events for the grades you coordinate!

Parent Survey

It's that time of year again. Please take our biannual parent survey to let us know how we're doing. We value your feedback as parents, and have utilized your input to make a lot of decisions about programming, professional development and other school needs. Please complete the survey by Sunday, May 31, so we have time to incorporate your input into our LCAP budget planning. En espanol.

The Bell Tower

 Bell Tower

Article from PBS about the Bell Tower at our new location:

The site of a future downtown San Diego K-8 elementary school is looking and sounding a lot more like a school.

Urban Discovery Academy officials on Monday installed a century-old, 1,100-pound bell into its Angels Bell Tower.

The $30,000 bell, which was donated by school trustee Edward Abeyta, was installed at the charter school's future home on 14th and F streets.

“The bell tower represents our value of education and preparing our next generation to be great stewards of our ever-changing world,” Abeyta said.

The new school, which will open in September, will offer students a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics or S.T.E.A.M.-based education.

School officials said the new campus will be designed to strengthen project-based education and to put the arts back in the classroom.

“It’s one thing to have buildings but it’s another to bring in the culture and the rich integration of families for an overall ecosystem for what makes a good downtown,” Abeyta said.

The bell will be named in honor of Abeyta’s mother, LaMorah Abeyta. The school is currently located at 730 45th Street.

Early Pick Up

Many of you have been picking up your students early on Fridays. Please remember that the school day ends at 3:00pm and early pick up is discouraged by UDA. It is very disruptive to the learning environment to have so many kids pulled consistently from their classes, particularly on Fridays when we are wrapping up important work in the classroom.

A UDA uniform shirt must be visible under outerwear OR outerwear must be a UDA hoodie.

Students must wear CLOSED SHOES at all times.

Shorts or leggings MUST be worn under skirts.

No leggings, jeggings, tights or form-fitting clothing may be worn alone.
